NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAIL YARD

RAILROAD (HIGH MAST)
ELYRIA, OH – APRIL 2013

THE PROJECT

The Norfolk Southern Railway is a Class I railroad in the United States, owned by the Norfolk Southern Corporation. The railroad operates over 22,000 route miles in 22 eastern states and has rights in Canada from Buffalo to Toronto and over the Albany to Montreal route. The most common commodity hauled on the railroad is coal from mines in Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The railroad also offers the most extensive intermodal network in eastern North America.

THE PROCESS

While the Railroad was interested in retrofitting their depot facility with energy efficient LED, they were concerned about the impact of the railroad’s intense vibrations on the high mast poles. In spite of a high level of vibration, Norfolk and Southern installed our 400-watt HBXSL in a high mast application over their rail yard with a 60-degree beam spread.

THE RESULT

The railroad has reported saving over 50% on their energy costs after switching out the older metal halide fixtures with SpecGrade LED’s sophisticated LED luminaires and our mounting brackets hold the lights securely in place despite the vibrations caused by the passing trains.
