The Ingress Protection (IP) Rating System

The Ingress Protection rating system was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to rate the ability of electronic fixtures to prevent the ingress of solids and liquids into the equipment housing.

Products earn an IP code, comprised of the letters IP followed by two digits (example: IP65). Each digit designates the degree of protection the product is designed to provide against the intrusion of environmental contaminants. The first number signifies the level of protection against solid particles like dust and dirt. The second number represents the level of protection against liquids. The higher the value of each digit, the more robust the defense provided by the product.



This handy rating system is a quick-reference code for specifiers to determine how suitable a lighting fixture is for their given growing environment. It’s important to invest in lighting equipment that will stand the test of time and provide an ample return on investment.
