SpecGrade LED Achieves UL8800 Certification for Horticultural Lighting Equipment

In any technology industry, safety and performance certifications from reputable third party investigators and testing labs are important for establishing trusted standards within the industry. Relatively few of these certifications have existed for horticultural lighting until quite recently. One of these valuable new seals of approval for LED grow lighting equipment is the UL 8800, offered by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) in their Outline of Investigation for Horticultural Lighting Equipment.

The UL made the announcement in early 2017 that it would be breaking out Horticulture into its own category and offering the UL8800 certification to fixtures that meet the stringent performance criteria. Backed by 100+ years of proven safety science expertise, UL certifies industrial products and writes the standards that various industries have come to trust.

LED Lighting Certified for Growing Environments

Underwriters Laboratory created the UL 8800 horticulture certification due to the uniquely harsh environment of a grow facility, where dust, dampness, and air debris combined with high temperatures and humidity combine to create a unique environment for lighting fixtures as well as the non-permanent cords and plugs for this environmental application.

In addition to certifying the safety requirements of horticulture lighting, the UL 8800 takes into account a variety of performance testing to acknowledge the unique requirements of plants to produce biochemical growth under artificial light. UL testing takes into account some of these unique parameters, including;

  • Ensuring output of a 350-800nm spectral distribution, acknowledging chlorophyll is not the only photoreactive chemical in plants related to growth and flowering
  • Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF) measurements binned into 10 nm ranges
  • PPF output and photon efficacy measurements
  • Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) distribution information

Growers and cultivation investors that rely on the UL’s certifications trust that their assessment takes into account not only fixture safety, but performance as well. This is recognized throughout the industry. The UL 8800 certification is required to get a DLC (Design Lights Consortium) certification for their Qualified Products List, which in turn is required to get utility rebates.
